September 12, 2013April 12, 2014Lauren MalhoitBlogsLeave a comment

From a traditional vSphere HA standpoint, the jump from Sphere 5.1 to vSphere 5.5 has not brought with it major enhancements.  Host monitoring and virtual machine monitoring have stayed pretty much the same in this minor version upgrade. To read more click here.

Convert a VMware VMDK to an RDM

August 20, 2013April 12, 2014Lauren MalhoitBlogsLeave a comment

Believe it or not, there are still applications that require the use of a Raw Device Mapping (RDM) if you’re going to virtualize the machine it runs on. Recently I encountered a situation where the hard disk was already formatted as a Virtual Machine Disk format (VMDK) on a Virtual Machine File System (VMFS) datastore in VMware. In a…

A couple of weeks ago I was helping a client move to new servers within their vSphereenvironment while also doing an upgrade of their VMware products. While this can be a really smooth transition, there are always things you need to consider if you don’t want to shut down your VMs for a maintenance period. To read more…

VMware upgrades: Advice for beginners (and pros)

December 11, 2012April 12, 2014Lauren MalhoitBlogsLeave a comment

A few months ago I received an email regarding a blog I wrote about upgrading VMware vSphere. In short, I was asked some questions about how to approach an upgrade of vSphere in a relatively small environment. This admin was concerned about posting to the VMware forums because she felt she might be chastised for…
